New chamber design to allow tank maintenance

Eurotank’s extensive experience has helped a customer avoid costly and disruptive works by coming up with a solution to a tank problem that prevented access to the tanks for maintenance.

The site’s fuel storage infrastructure was poorly designed with chambers installed over the top of the tank man-ways, making it impossible to remove the tank lids.

The customer had been told that the chambers needed to be demolished and rebuilt until Eurotank offered an alternative solution, having come across the problem on other customer sites.

Eddie Fataciune, Head of Operations for Eurotank Environmental, said: “We’ve seen tank chambers designed with the tank top smaller than the tank lid before so we instantly knew what the solution was to complete the gasket replacement and make any future maintenance on the tank possible.”

Eurotank inerted the two tanks using nitrogen to allow hot work inside the chamber, and then cut the chamber bottom lip to allow the tank lids to be removed without any obstruction.

To keep the chambers water tight, the team laminated the GRP chambers with fibreglass and resin and painted them. This not only allowed the site to replace all failed tank lid gaskets but also ensures maintenance can be carried out in the future.
